Management Tip of the Day: Skip the Job-Hopping and Stay Put
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at 2:45am

BOSTON (Reuters Life!) - The Management Tip of the Day offers quick, practical management tips and ideas from Harvard Business Review and HBR.org (http:\\www.hbr.org). Any opinions expressed are not endorsed by Reuters.

"It's become common wisdom that to advance your career you need to look for better jobs at different companies. But contrary to what most people say, research has shown that job-hopping may not be the best - or quickest - way to the top. In fact, moves within the same company produce a greater number of and faster promotions than external moves. Next time you're considering a jump to a new company for a seemingly better title, remember that many hirers look for stability as well as experience and capabilities. Staying put and securing an internal promotion, even if it takes a little longer, may yield better career results in the long term. "

- Today's Management Tip was adapted from "Job-Hopping to the Top and Other Career Fallacies" by Monika Hamori.
